What is it? The Energy of
Performance.
Creatine is the base of the high energy compound "Creatine phosphate" (CrP).
It is the only form of energy stored that can provide the horse with
maximum power when needed. This is a stored form of energy which is
instantly available to the muscle cells for rapid acceleration. When a
horse leaves the gate, or makes a big move during a race, he is calling
upon his muscles to instantly provide more energy. Generation of energy
from fat and carbohydrates is too slow for this kind of quick kick! The
horse will need to rely on energy stored in the form of Adenosine
Triphosphate (ATP) and creatine phosphate. There is no known way to
improve upon a horse's level of stored ATP. The muscles have a set amount
and must begin to replenish it by burning carbohydrates or fats as it is
used up. When ATP releases its energy, it loses (phosphorous). The role of
creatine is to instantly replace that phosphorous molecule from its own
supply. Research has shown that increased intake of creatine in the diet
can produce an increase in the stored ATP in the muscle. Supplementing the
diet with Creatine raises the ATP level and improves performance. Creatine
is naturally found only in meats. Since horses are vegetarians,
theoretically the potential is there for improved performance and speed.
If your horse comes off the gate well but quickly loses ground to the
speedballs, Creatine should help your horse hang in there longer and get a
